I love being a freelancer. There are definitely challenges like not having a regular paycheck but I know there is so much more possibility in freelancing and I get to do what I want to do and work with who I want to work with which is the best thing in the world and makes the days so much more wonderful and outweighs any cons I could possibly think of!

I'm so glad this article resonated with you. I have been a victim of burning it a both ends more than once and I never come out the victor. Remember to take the time you need to re-energize and to keep yourself healthy. When it comes down to it, you are the only one who can fully take care of you.

I am so in the middle of this train wreck righ now! I've just been put on salary as an in-house designer and am trying to push back to have upper management realize the only way it's been getting done IS all the extra work I've been doing. They're not interested in hearing it and absolutely want no overtime so this article has inspired me to step back and prioritize ME.

I will always do my best but I can only do my best under the conditions they give me. Most don't understand just what it takes to meet ALL the deadlines so they don't appreciate the extra efforts anyway.

Again, a big thanks for shedding some light on this issue literally the very day I needed it most.

Hi Becky and thank you for sharing...very relevant as I left the office at 9:45 PM tonight. You need to find something for YOU and commit to it. I started with one day - Monday night-by going to a pilates class. It's only one hour, but it really helps me to clear my head and leave work and everything else behind. Bottom line is physically and mentally we need to carve out this time for our well being. That could be in the form of sleep, eating right, exercise or anything that relaxes your mind and something you enjoy. Make it a habit and you slowly begin to make yourself a priority and feel the benefits. I hope this makes sense as I'm exhausted and half asleep. Off to bed to get some well needed rest : )

Becky - I had a boss who seldom appreciated our good work and we were more often than not criticized for our effort. That brought my morale down, and hence the productivity. I'm a big fan of mindmapping. It allows non-linear thinkers like me to make connections quickly without getting locked into an outline mode. I've done it recently by bringing one of those easel-sized (27 in. by 34 in.)paper tabs to a meeting of a volunteer group. It was a huge topic we were taking on, so having plenty of room to write ideas and observations down made it easy to track and then link them.

Electronically, I like something called Personal Brain, which you can get for free on the web. (I have NO connection with this company.) It lets you not only make connections on the existing window, but then link to other previous windows of topics you've created. Easy sorting, too. They've got a $149 version, but so far the free one has been good for me. The advanced ones allow you to connect with other people on different computers, which might be perfect for meetings where you all can't be in the same room.

For the person looking for a mentor: look for someone who knows their craft, beyond merely having talent to produce work that you like. There is more to the craft than just getting the job done. Look for someone who understands the use and purpose of design and who understands its history. Don't just ask how to achieve this or that effect--ask about the creative process that led to the end result.

For the person mentoring someone else: Don't just tell them how to do it. Ask them to figure out how to do it. Ask them why they want to do it--essentially, ask them why they want to copy something someone else has done. Challenge them to produce something that someone else will want to copy. Push people to think about why they are designing a specific project, not just about how they will get it done.

Excellent post with a lot of things to think about. An ex boyfriend of mine won an engineering prize in college for creatively solving the problem of how to get a gated pickup carrying giraffes under a bridge that was 1 inch too low. Definitely there are more types of creative professionals than the ones that usually come to mind when considering creativity. And personal style enters into the equation as well: my ex-boyfriend is definitely creative and a great software engineer, but he wouldn't be a good fit in many traditional types off environments. It would be good for prospective bosses to take a moment to consider not just their definition of "out of the box" before they write the job description, but decide how far out of the box they might be comfortable with.

There is a well-known video on the FISH method of play at work. It's about customer service and even having a job such as packing fish can be a quite an exciting, and fun occupation. You may want to look it up. It's about a fish market in Seattle. There is a lot of research to back up that philosophy.

I have heard of Interplay, but have not used it.

I use play in my courses as well. I like to use humor because I think it helps people to remember things. There are several research studies on cognitive learning with the use of humor. Try the following links:

Wonderful post. Thank you. Do you have research to back up the points you make about things like "having fun" and "valuing people"? I agree with it in principle, but wonder if most large corporations will buy into these concepts without "proof".
I use InterPlay (http://interplay.org) as a basis for classes and workshops that I teach. I know that others have used InterPlay in corporations and that it teaches the things you list here. You've inspired me to check with the people who have done these corporate workshops to see if they've followed up to determine how much impact or continuity they had.
I look forward to seeing what else Corporate Creatives has to offer.

This is great stuff. I have developed a whole program for goal reaching that was inspired by a vision board. Identifying and verbalizing our goals is the first step to success. I'm going to keep these tips in mind and possibly modify them for my coaching practice. They are great and simply put. Thanks.

Many people I meet, potential clients as well, worry about finding a new job. So much so that they spend all their mental energy on worry rather than planning and being pro-active.

So to add to that, my suggestion for getting back in the saddle is to be sure you are focused on creating the outcome you desire and using your energy toward that end, rather than maintaining fear and worry.

I was thinking about, "getting back in the saddle". I was laid off from a Senior Art Director position in NYC about a month after 9/11. It was a high pressure buys situation, and with a decent severance, I thought I might take it easy and chill for about a month or so.. But within two weeks, I was going bats**t insane with restlessness. So yes, back in the saddle.

They say in the Martial Arts, it's not the falling down that's hard. It's the GETTING BACK UP that's difficult. But it's the part that matters.

Thank you ladies for your comments. Yes, spring does put me in the mood to clear out the cobwebs and look at spring for it's freshness and new color. I love winter too, don't get me wrong--in fact it's my favorite season. But spring puts me in a mood to write...write....write.
